Classification and characteristics of glow plugs

In terms of glow plug design, there are two types: coil type and shell type. The coil type is where the heating coil is unsheathed. This type has been the main type since the 1970s.

The type of shell in which the coil is protected by heat resistance. Now this type is the most popular among all other types of glow plugs. In addition, the type of shell is divided into two categories according to the heating time, as follows.

Standard type
from 15~20 seconds to 800ºC
The coil resistance increases with temperature, and the current is almost twice the rated current when the glow is on, and it can heat up quickly.

Super fast
Maximum from 10 seconds to 800ºC
When the heating coil and self-regulating coil are combined together, it creates an excellent response system, easy and quick start.

Features of metal glow plugs

Correct use of the method 
  1. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding battery capacity, as a diesel engine uses more electricity than a petrol engine during starting. Insufficient battery capacity may not heat the glow plug, resulting in difficulty starting. The same phenomenon will occur if the battery is bad.
  1. When selecting a glow plug, make sure that the manufacturer's part number matches the BERLT product catalogue. Mistakes in selection can sometimes lead to starting difficulties (e.g. using a product specified for 24 V in a 12 V vehicle) or melting of the glow plug (e.g. using a product designed for 12 V in a 24 V vehicle).
It takes 3.20 seconds to heat up, less than 10 seconds and 20 seconds for SQ type and Coil type. If it does not start properly after preheating, continuous power supply may greatly consume battery power and adversely affect the operation. life of the glow plug. After preheating, turn off the switch and turn it on again.

Notification:
  1. Be sure to thoroughly clean the glow plug holes in the engine so that the plug can be inserted easily and smoothly.

  3. Observe the heating conditions specified by the engine manufacturer.
  4. Dropped glow plugs must not be used.

 
Troubleshooting procedures

Before replacing, check if the glow plug is connected correctly. Also check with a tester if the voltage supplied is higher than the nominal one.

Remove the glow plug and apply rated voltage to check for heat (in most cases, poor starting can be caused by other reasons).
